EXHIBIT BASEBALL CARDS FROM 1949 --- WITH CHECKLIST
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
F. 1949
Inscription: MADE IN U.S.A. and AN EXHIBIT CARD Size: ½ inch or 17/32 inch
The cards from 1949 are easy to date because they included the printing of “AN EXHIBIT CARD” in addition to the “MADE IN U.S.A.” of size 1/2 inch. To further justify my opinion that cards which depict league champions were produced in the subsequent year, you will note that the league champions of 1948 are in the 1949 set because they have the “AN EXHIBIT CARD” inscription.
However, this leads to my first mystery for which I do not have a complete explanation. If this idea about cards being produced after the season is always true, why do the two cards for 1949 league champions have the “AN EXHIBIT CARD” inscription? Perhaps they were produced in 1949 or were produced in 1950 when all the other cards had a smaller “MADE IN U. S. A.” and no “AN EXHIBIT CARD” inscription. Along with any other questions, or corrections of my information I would encourage anybody to correspond to me so that I can revise my lists accordingly.
For 1949 I have located 33 cards, including the 1948 Braves and the 1948 Indians. I did not include the 1949 Yankees or the 1949 Dodgers. Also, I have seen on some lists that there is a card for Schoendienst with the “AN EXHIBIT CARD” inscription but I have not seen or obtained one yet. Also, The Standard Catalog of Vintage Baseball Cards indicates that 1949 cards of Bearden, Branca, and Dillinger exist without “AN EXHIBIT CARD” but information on the baseballcardvariationsguidebookvol2 website discounts this opinion.
Two other discrepancies on the Standard Catalog list: It shows a card for Appling without the “AN EXHIBIT CARD” inscription. I have not located or obtained one of these. Also, the Standard Catalog would have one believe that there is a Berra card with “AN EXHIBIT CARD” and the “PRINTED IN U. S. A.” inscription. I believe that this is a misprint in the catalog. No such card exists.
