EXHIBIT BASEBALL CARDS FROM 1954-1956 --- WITH CHECKLISTS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I. 1954 – 1956
1954, 1956 Inscription: PRINTED IN U.S.A. Size: 3/4 inch
1955 Made in U.S.A. Size: ½ inch
MADE IN U.S.A. Size: ½ inch
MADE IN U.S.A. with AN EXHIBIT CARD Size: ½ inch
PRINTED IN U.S.A. Size: ¾ inch
The 1955 set, which has post card backs and is checklisted in the Standard catalog, gives lots of clues about 1954 and 1956.
First, these two sets include new cards with the inscription “PRINTED IN U.S A.” which is ¾ inch long. I have located 28 of these. (26 for 1954 because there were no pennant winner cards for 1953)
Again, some of these may only have been printed in one or two of these years. For example, I doubt if Hermanski was produced in 1956 since he was out of baseball after 1953.
Based on the 1955 check list I have added cards and inscriptions to the 1954 and 1956 lists that were first produced in previous years.
Based on this assumption, I have included two other variation cards for which I have not found a definitive answer as to when they were produced and for how many years. Doby and Rizzuto who first appeared in 1949 with “AN EXHIBIT CARD” and “MADE IN U.S.A.” (length ½ inch) were produced in the same dimensions with the “AN EXHIBIT CARD” inscription showing scratch lines through it. These could have been produced any year before 1955 because in that year both Rizzuto and Doby (with a post card back) have the scratched “AN EXHIBIT CARD”. So I have entered them both in the 1954 and 1956 speculative lists .
